Keeping our communities warm - through freezing temps and winter storms

ATLANTA, February 5, 2024 -- Each winter, we brace for the worst and aim to be the best. It’s why Southern Company Gas and its local distribution companies in Illinois, Georgia, Tennessee and Virginia are regarded among the most reliable providers of natural gas in the industry.

But we couldn’t do it without boots on the ground. For many of our customers – including our own field workers – this winter season has been especially brutal, with debilitating snow and ice and crippling temperature drops. Through it all, our ground teams didn’t flinch.

Southern Company Gas employees worked around the clock during Winter Storm's Gerri and Heather to prevent major service outages and respond to weather-related issues. For customers, it meant consistent warmth and comfort even at our peak. And for our field workers, it was another demonstration of commitment and outstanding service in the communities we serve.

During the coldest day for each of our subsidiaries:

• Atlanta Gas Light’s max daily send out equaled over 640,000 megawatt-hours. This is enough energy to completely charge 16 million electric vehicles.
• Chattanooga Gas’ max daily send out equaled over 38,000 megawatt-hours. This is enough energy to completely charge 970,000 electric vehicles.
• Nicor Gas' max daily send out equaled over 1,250,000 megawatts-hours. This is enough energy to completely charge 31 million electric vehicles.
• Virginia Natural Gas' max daily send out equaled over 100,000 megawatts-hours. This is enough energy to completely charge 2 million electric vehicles.
