To date, Southern Company Gas, its charitable foundation and its subsidiaries have supported more than 500 charities across Georgia, Illinois, Tennessee and Virginia by gifting millions of dollars in grants and thousands of hours of volunteers' time. We strive to uplift and empower the areas where we live, work and serve through charitable giving and volunteer efforts that fuel possibilities, improve communities and grant access to sustainable resources. We are intentionally focused on initiatives that inspire new ways of connecting and transforming the communities where we operate, tied to social justice, economic mobility, environmental stewardship and community enrichment.
Each of our subsidiaries is committed to supporting local, small, and diverse businesses as well as statewide economies through active participation in state and local chambers of commerce and business organizations. Our employees are active leaders in associations that support businesses through advocacy, education and networking. In 2023-2024 alone, two of our three subsidiary executives chaired their state chambers. And, as we bring renewable gas solutions to market, we help to create local high-paying clean energy jobs and attract new businesses that rely on natural gas in their manufacturing processes or as a component in their products.
We are committed to developing long-term, mutually beneficial business partnerships with small, local and diverse suppliers, including Tier One and Tier Two suppliers. Suppliers located in and employing people in our service territories provide economic benefits to local communities that can last for years. So far, we’re exceeding our goal of 36.7% in 2023, nearly 40% of the company dollars spent were with businesses owned by minorities, women and veterans.
We have a long history of doing our part to minimize environmental impact. Dedicated to meeting or exceeding all state and federal laws and regulations, our subsidiaries protect diverse habitats in our service territories by avoiding impacts from the start of a project, minimizing unavoidable impacts and restoring land, water and other natural resources back to conditions before construction. We also work with environmental agencies and community leaders to monitor, test and clean up any archeological sites where a manufactured gas plant once existed. Engaging with organizations such as the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation and The Nature Conservancy, we help develop local solutions for eliminating invasive species, climate-proofing prairies, restoring coastal ecosystems and protecting endangered native plant and animal species.
Volunteering is an opportunity for us to live up to our commitment to strengthen the communities we serve. Our internal site, MyImpact, makes finding volunteer opportunities easy. Through programs like EverGreen, Energy to Serve and our United Way campaign, we’ve planted pollinator gardens, cleaned up waterways and run food, clothes and toy drives to meet the urgent needs of our local communities.
